This week I interviewed one of my best friends, Heather Wilson. The first time you meet her, her outgoing and bubbly personality will make you want to be her friend. Seriously. She has an effortless aura about her, and she always has a smile on her face. It’s one of the many things I admire about her. Heather will make you feel right at home in her life and always has the most loving and caring advice. That’s why I asked her to talk about self-love on the blog today. She has such a great perspective on body image and loving yourself. I hope y’all enjoy.
What makes you feel good about yourself?
Like a lot of women, sometimes it's hard for me to feel good about myself. I get in a rut and get really down. I've found what helps is figuring out what you truly enjoy and pursuing it. For me, I love being outside, and I love fashion. I also love to be outside and enjoy the beautiful weather and explore new places. I love to dress up and feel like I look good. It's not for anyone but me, because I want to look nice. Taking the time for myself for those things is essential.
What advice would you give a teenage girl about self-love?
The advice I gave my younger sister when she was in high school was to accept that not everyone will like you even with no reason at all, and that's ok. Not everyone has to like you, and you don't have to like everyone. Also, not caring what everyone else thinks and doing what makes you happy is so important. It's easy to get caught up in what other people think and their perception of you. That was so important to me in high school, and I based my self-worth of how many friends I had and comparing myself to other people by developing the confidence to be your own person.
What was the hardest thing for you to accept about your body?
In middle school I never could wear what my friends wore. I started wearing a bra in elementary school, and I could never fit into a lot of the brands that my friends wore by the time we got to middle school. It made me feel left out; it was like I skipped the teenage clothes and had to go straight to the adult clothes. All I wanted to do was be like everyone else, but my body was so different it made me feel left out. Eventually as we got older, my friends were jealous that I was curvier.
What type of outfit makes you feel beautiful?
Putting on a dress with heels makes me instantly feel beautiful. Dresses are so easy and make me feel free. Adding heels makes me feel like I can take on the world. I love being tall and confident.
What has been your journey to self-love and self-confidence?
Realizing that I need to prioritize my needs first was a way that leads me to self-confidence. I always have tried to please people and put others needs before my own. That can be good, but understanding if I'm not happy then it's not worth it was difficult. I was fortunate enough to be able to study abroad in college. During that semester, I didn't have the same restrictions I did here. No family, no social pressures. I had finally had the freedom and time to discover myself and my needs. That helped my confidence by being able to accomplish something like that all on my own.
How can we create a culture that empowers all women to love themselves? How can fashion play into that?
Every woman is different, and incorporating different body types in media can make a huge impact on the culture of self-love in women. If the public is exposed to different body types and styles, it becomes easier to love and accept them all as beautiful.
How does YBF's clothing provide you with an extra boost of self-confidence?
YBF has organizational culture and image of acceptance, and it doesn't fit one mold of fashion. Their styles aren't made for one body type and can look good on everyone.
What have you struggled the most with when it comes to body image?
Comparing myself to fashion images and my friends has always made me struggle with my body image. Again, that comparing and wanting to be like everyone else can cripple your self-confidence and body image. Embracing your unique and individual body type is so hard, especially with social media. It's difficult to look at all these models on instagram and think, "Why can't I look like that?" You never see mediocre pictures of them, they always look so beautiful.
What is your favorite part of your body?
My favorite part of my body is my hair. It's really curly and different, it makes me feel unique. Sometimes I wish I had hair that didn't frizz up in high humidity, but I honestly won't trade it. My hair is unique to me, and I love that.
In what ways do you take care of your body and keep it healthy that helps to increase your self-confidence/self-love?
I love being outside, in any season. I'm basically chained to a desk all day, so I take any opportunity to get outside. It gets me away from my computer, my phone, and helps me take a break. I'll go on walks during my lunch break, and I love to hike and swim. Even in the winter I love to go snowboarding. It helps my self-confidence because I know I'm taking time to do what's best for me, and it's something I love.
One of my favorite pieces of advice from Heather is to stop comparing yourself to others. Our journeys, our struggles, our highs and lows are unique to our story. Let them be unique. Don't trade in your beauty for someone else's.
Happy Monday, YBF lovelies!
I think some fashion inspiration is the best way to break a case of the Monday blues! This adorable outfit might cure any blues you have all week. I am in LOVE with this silk maxi from Knot Sisters that we just got in stock.
This silk maxi dress is detailed with a shirred neckline and a high/low hem for a stylish summer look perfect for any event. First, I styled the dress with our Tallulah wedges and Sable wristlet in Coral, which gave it the perfect look for a casual outdoor wedding, date night, baby shower, or bridal brunch.
The gold wedge gives it a pop of shimmer, while still looking like a neutral. This allows you to go all out with fun, colorful accessories. I paired the coral Sable wristlet with this outfit because I think coral goes well for almost any occasion, especially baby showers and weddings. I think bright blue tassel earrings would also be a darling way to add a pop of color into the outfit if you wanted to stick with a neutral bag.
Next, I styled the maxi with my favorite lace-up Sam Edelman heels. The suede, open-toed pumps are to DIE for. Seriously, they are the perfect summer heel. They dress the outfit up a little more, making it perfect for a formal wedding or summer work event. This definitely wouldn't be an everyday look for me, but I would definitely pair a pump with the maxi when you want a show-shopping look.
I love, love the monochromatic look I got by pairing the heels and maxi together, so when accessorizing I would stay with my simple Pandora bangles in silver and gold paired with a neutral cross-body bag with gold detailing. The gold detailing pairs perfectly with the shimmer in the silk material and will also tie in the Pandora bracelets to create the outfit that will be sure to turn heads.
Lastly, you can easily style this dress with a fun pair of slide-on sandals. Colorful sandals are all the rage right now, and I know why. Since neutrals are huge this season, everyone is adding colors to their outfits through their shoes. For a comfy, casual look with this maxi, jump on the color shoe trend. Find a pair of sandals in your favorite color, pair them with this dress, throw your hair in a top-knot, and you have a chic, effortless style perfect for any day of the week.
Keep the accessories minimal when going for this look. That way, it gives off the "oh, I just threw this on!" vibe, while you look like a million bucks. Effortless looks go a long way when trying to stay stylish, comfy, and casual during our busy schedules.
I hope these tips gave you some inspiration on how to style this gorgeous silk maxi. If you're in love, but don't have one yet, be sure to stop by the shoppe or shop online here to get yours today! We only have a few left, and we don't restock our items allowing customers to have unique pieces for their closets.
Since things are warming up both here in Georgia and back home in South Dakota (well, mostly GA now that y'all are in a blizzard...), I thought I would share an some outfits drawing from the hottest trend this spring: FLORALS! I've seen florals on every runway show from New York to Paris, and I'm so happy YBF is carrying tons of floral options for spring/summer! This week, I'm showing you two different options for this beautiful lilac and pink floral print.
The first option is this boho off-the-should dress! If you love bold, all-over prints and have a free-spirited style, this dress is perfect for you. The elastic top and off-the-shoulder style is comfortable and stylish all at once. The breathable fabric will keep you cool all summer long. Also, it has a great bell-sleeve that ties the entire boho look together. Pair it with our Matisse lace-up flats or a tan/brown strappy sandal to continue the boho look throughout the outfit.
Add statement earrings and a few bracelets to complete the look. If you're feeling super trendy, skip the earrings and go for a choker. This will make the outfit feel fashion-forward without being overbearing.
If you're less of a dress girl, this top is perfect for you! This floral top is sort of an insta-outfit. It really does all the heavy lifting for you. Throw it on, wear it with a pair of jeans or white shorts when it's warmer, and, voila, done.
Since it has the beautiful detailing at the top, I wouldn't accessorize with a necklace; let the top speak for itself. Instead, I would go with a chunky stud earring, a stack of mixed metal bracelets (like Alex and Ani), and a few statement rings in gold. A neutral wristlet adds the perfect "pop" against the dark denim and bright top.
I hope this post gave you some inspiration to take a chance and wear some florals this season! It's the perfect way to add texture, depth, and a pop of color to your outfit.
It's that time of year when everyone is ready for sunshine and warmer weather! Winter has lasted way too long, and most of us are impatiently waiting to break out our spring clothes! So how do you fashionably transition from winter to spring? I'm sharing some of my Do's and Don'ts for transitioning your wardrobe on the blog today!
DO Start to slowly incorporate bright colors
Throw on a bright, patterned scarf or use a handbag in colors such as red, blue, or green to add some color to your wardrobe. Our HoboBags are Perfect for starting the transition, especially because they come in SO many colors and styles!
DON'T wear cold and warm weather accessories at the same time
Once you've brought out the dresses or pencil skirts without tights, it's time to leave your hats and mittens in the closet for next year. Instead, layer up with a cute cardigan or long T underneath, booties, and scarf if necessary.
DO Get creative with how you layer outfits
It still may be too cold for just a light jacket and a T-shirt, but that doesn't mean you need to wear bulky sweaters until May. Instead, try layering a cardigan under your blazer for an extra layer of warmth without the look of winter.
DON'T bust out the sundresses quite yet!
Dark winter boots and bright spaghetti strapped dresses isn't flattering on anyone, so just wait until it warms up outside to where you can pair your beautiful dresses with cute sandals and heels! You'll have plenty of time in late spring and summer to wear as many dresses as you want, so don't rush. Instead, mix leggings and tunics with booties to give you the spring look while staying warm.
DO Hit the town in colorful shoes.
Colorful shoes- like these emerald green heels- are perfect for adding a little spring into your step. And when the color of 2017 is green, who can't resist starting that trend as soon as they can! Dark pants or a neutral skirt and tights will keep the look from getting too wild.
I hope these tips give you a little help when making the transition from winter to spring! Our new spring collections are in the store, so be sure to check them out! Many of the pieces are perfect for incorporating these tips for now and you can continue to wear them throughout the year! This week's outfit of the week is perfect for an everyday look that can be worn so many ways! I paired a collared button down, with a Wooden Ships sweater (so soft!), added skinnies, a suede bootie, and that suede trench I talked about last week!
Voila! It's the perfect way to look pulled together any day of the week!
I love how effortless the entire outfit looks. You can wear this anywhere. Running Errands. Church. Brunch. Shopping. The options are endless.
If you like a more fitted sweater, definitely go with your normal size. I sized up into a medium to get the oversized sweater look I've been loving this season.
You could easily style the sweater and button down with corduroy skinnies or a ankle-length dress pant and make it work appropriate too (if your office allows business casual). Just add heels or a pointed toe flat!
The Hobo Bag I've paired with the outfit is also a perfect work essential! It will fit everything you need while still looking cute! The color is also to die for. I love that it's not too brown, so I can still pair it with black (like the trench and booties)!
Last, but definitely not least, let's talk about the gorgeous Uno de 50 necklace I wore! This is a necklace you can get so many wears out of! From pairing it with outfits like this, it would also be perfect with crew neck tees or dresses too once it gets a little warmer out. I love the multiple chain look with the little gems sporadically placed to add a little shimmer to the necklace. I don't think you can go wrong by owning this one!
I hope you enjoyed this week's outfit of the week!
